Volunteer groups band together for rail trail revamp

BELLARINE Rail Trail is undergoing an environmental revamp to beat weeds and pest animals, according to volunteers.
Local environmental groups and Friends of the Bellarine Rail Trail have banded together to enhance the area.
Volunteers were working hard at the trail’s intersection with Fellows Rd, Point Lonsdale, this week.
Program manager Matt Crawley said the work would create a diverse habitat for wildlife and beautify the trails.
Environmental works would help protect the trail’s grass and heath woodlands and coastal saltmarsh areas, he said.
“This section of the trail was previously inundated with spiny rush, boxthorn and fennell. The site has now been changed from a negative to a positive, with weeds addressed and habitat created.”
Queenscliff Community Nursery’s Jill Warneke said volunteers were planting indigenous plants grown from seed.
“This creates great ownership to the site and values.”
