Geelong’s pint-sized bookworms will help attempt a record next weekend for the most children reading together with adults, according to organisers.
The Victorian branch of Children’s Book Council of Australia aims for 350 children at Deakin University’s Waterfront Cafe.
BIG Read organiser Christine Oughtred said the Geelong readers would connect via satellite with other participants in Ballarat and Melbourne.
The event needed more than 3234 children across the state to break last year’s record, Ms Oughtred said.
The record attempt was all about encouraging families to read together, she said.
“We want kids to have fun with literature.
“It’s about parents putting a bit of time aside to reach with their children. It isn’t about skill level. it’s just a fun thing that’s also a great bonding experience.”
Ms Oughtred said The BIG Read started 10.30am on April 10.
Parents and children could register for $5 online at bigread.cbca.org.au or at the café on the day.
