Cabarets to make a splash at Ponds

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

‘COME to the cabaret’ goes the line from the famous song but Waurn Ponds Hotel is instead bringing the cabaret to Geelong.
Hotel manager Margaret Spence said the new Tuesday Cabaret was great for all ages.
Sydney’s legendary piano man John Watson and his band would be on hand on the first Tuesday of each month to liven up proceedings, Spence said.
The program would pair Watson with one of Australia’s most sought-after entertainers, singers, comedians, magicians or theatre performers at each monthly event.
Watson, a popular pianist and singer from Sydney, had performed for celebrities such as Alan Jones, Brett Lee, Glen McGrath, Michael Parkinson and Anthony Pratt, Spence said.
“He’ll be playing all the hits from the 1920s through to the 1980s, including some of the great sing-along songs for the young and old.
“A special guest artist will be flown in from Sydney to entertain after lunch, backed by John Watson and his band.
“Our first show feature international comedian Al Showman and future shows will present singer, actor and dancer Derek Metzger from London’s West End plus many more fantastic performers.
“This brand-new concept of Tuesday Cabaret has traditional sing-along songs that many people love and enjoy.
The shows will also feature more up-to-date sing-along songs from Elton John, Billy Joel and Neil Diamond plus a few surprises.
“After the morning sing-along and lunch our showtime features one of the invited guest artists from among Australia’s best-loved celebrities and finest entertainers.
“It will be a fun-filled day to meet up with friends and form new friendships, all while enjoying a fabulous lunch from the best chefs in Geelong.
Spence said Tuesday Cabaret was only $10 for members and included morning tea, with a special seniors lunch also available.
Bookings were available on 5243 1154, she said.
