Teen dies in Newcomb house fire

By PAUL MILLAR

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy has died in a house fire in Greenwood Street, Newcomb.

Pat Geary, operations officer at the CFA, said the teenager’s body had been found at the rear of the home.

The CFA received numerous calls about the blaze at the single storey, vinyl clad home just after 2pm.

Four units from Geelong City, one from Belmont and one from Lara rushed to the scene to find the building blazing.

“It was well alight when we arrived, it was fairly intense,” Mr Geary told The Independent.

“The teenager was deceased on arrival and was discovered in a back room of the property,’’ he said.

Emergency crews sealed of the immediate area as there was asbestos in the home, which was 80 per cent destroyed.

A police forensic team has been called in and will examine the scene, while a report will be prepared for the state coroner.

A spokeswoman for the Geelong Hospital confirmed that a nine-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy had been brought from the scene with a 58-year-old female.

They are all said to be in a stable condition and it is believed they were taken there for observation.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and detectives are on scene.
