Geelong defender Josh Hunt will not be re-contracted for the 2014 season and will be able to explore playing opportunities as an unrestricted free agent.

Hunt, 31, played 198 games and kicked 29 goals in his career that began in 2001 against the Dockers.

He played mostly as a defender, usually being asked to play on quality opponents. Hunt also twice fought back from serious injury. He missed all but two games of the 2003 season with shin stress fractures and all of the 2009 campaign after rupturing his ACL in the NAB cup grand final.

“I have to say a huge thank you to all the coaches, players, staff and supporters that I have had the privilege to work with and for, during my time at the Geelong Football Club,” Hunt said.

“I totally understand and respect the direction of the club and its youth policy moving forward. I have made some amazing friendships and shared in some unforgettable memories, both of which will last a lifetime. Having said that, I still have the fire to compete, and feel I have a lot to offer at the highest level, therefore I will definitely be testing the free agency water.”

Cats’ coach Chris Scott praised Hunt for his dedication and role in the club’s recent success.

“Josh has filled a critical role in defence over a long period and been a key part of the successful Geelong team of the past decade,” Scott said.

“Josh was an easy player to coach, as he always put the team ahead of his personal goals. It’s not easy playing on small forwards, but his ability to fill that role was a big part of our success. He is widely respected around the club by his team mates, the coaches and the staff.

“His personality and the way he conducted himself as a player and representative of the Geelong Football Club has always been first class.

“Regardless of what the future holds for Josh, we all feel he will be successful. As a player from this highly successful period he will walk comfortably with his team mates of this era. His contribution will not be forgotten by those that shared this journey with him.”

In addition to the 2007 and 2011 premierships, Hunt was a member of two NAB Cup winning teams, and represented Australia in the international rules series against Ireland. He was a member of the Cats 2002 VFL premiership and played 20 AFL finals over his 13 years.
