PEDESTRIANS are at increased risk of being run down by motor vehicles now spring was here, according to Bellarine Peninsula’s top cop.
Acting Senior Sergeant David Magher said warmer weather increased the number of holiday makers and beach goers using local roads.
“More cars on our roads translates to more traffic accidents,” he said.
“The figures show there’s a seasonal spike in pedestrian injuries and fatalities at this time of the year.
“Going back over the decades, it’s the convergence of autumn and spring that is the most dangerous period for local pedestrians.”
Acting Sen Sgt Magher said it seemed that after the cooler months of winter, when there were fewer cars about, people became “very lackadaisical”.
“The accident trends of previous years should be an important lesson to all road users be they pedestrians or motorists.”
He said the very young and old were most at risk but called on people of all ages to play their part in road safety.
“I’d urge everyone to use pedestrian crossings where they are available and recommend that people be alert when walking along the roadside.”
Acting Sen Sgt Magher warned motorists also needed to take “special care” at this time of the year.
“Speeding and drink driving are an absolute no-no,” he said.
“Drivers should also ensure they are aware of the changing speed zones at this time of year.
“In many bayside towns the maximum speed is reduced from 60 to 50 kilometres an hour during the summer months when there are more people around.”
Acting Sen Sgt Magher also warned there had been an increase in car thefts and vehicle break-ins throughout the Bellarine Peninsula.
“I urge people not to leave valuables lying about in their cars in full public view,” he said.
“If you leave your vehicle unattended, especially at beach car parks, do not leave valuable items in the car, take them with you
“There are more and more people falling victim to this sort of opportunistic crime.
“Sadly there are those who think nothing of preying on innocent people. We need to be aware of this.”
