Colac Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following a shed fire in Birregurra over the weekend.
The blaze occurred around 9pm Saturday, causing extensive structural damage and explosions to the Main Road tree lopping workshop.
While most people in the neighbouring streets self-evacuated the remainder were asked to leave by emergency services.
Those who evacuated took shelter in a neighbouring hotel for about one and a half hours until the fire was under control and air quality improved.
No-one was injured as a result of the incident and a crime scene guard remained at the property overnight.
At this early stage, it is not known whether the fire was deliberately lit however detectives are investigating.
