School of rock tunes up for lessons in music industry

KIM WATERS
Students at Drysdale’s St Ignatius College are preparing to rock out next week with Australia’s longest-running education and entertainment tour.
Rock the Schools manager Neal Dennis said the event’s “action packed” free program included hands-on workshops, a careers seminar and a lunchtime concert.
“The program was brought over from New Zealand and gives kids lacking in music knowledge the chance to nurture their future in the industry.”
Mr Dennis said the program received “rave reviews” from Bellarine Peninsula students last year.
“The kids absolutely love it. We’ve never had anything other than rave reviews, with kids jumping up and down and going crazy at the lunchtime concerts.
“A lot of students come up after the workshops and say that they always wanted a career in the industry but
didn’t know how they could make it happen until now.
St Ignatius music teacher Linda Pape described the event as “spectacular”.
“More and more” kids were looking to careers in the music industry as sound engineers, stylists or managers, she said.
“Now that we have our music VET course it’s not just about being a music teacher or playing an instrument any more.”
