Shell in hot water over energy idea

A “stick-and-carrot” approach could make Shell’s Corio refinery convert excess heat to green energy, according to a local Family First candidate.
Gordon Alderson said the refinery could produce electricity from hot water it pumped into Corio Bay.
“This heat can be recovered as co-generated electricity using existing technology,” he said.
The change would reduce Shell’s reliance on brown coal, cut operating costs and reduce the environmental impacts, he said.
Mr Alderson called on Environment Minister John Thwaites to instruct the EPA to force Shell to adopt the system.
Shell refused to comment.
