Young paddlers draggin’ home the medals

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

A pair of young Norlane water dragon paddlers has managed to score a swag of medals at the Australian Dragon Boat Championships after only three months training.
Aiden Meyer, 12, captured two silver medals and his sister Kaitlyn, 16, captured a silver and bronze.
Geelong Water Dragons secretary Margaret Harry said the pair had worked hard since joining the club just three months ago.
“Club members have supported them with training and transport to get them into the inaugural junior state team which competed in the Australian championships in Adelaide over Easter.
“They have shown huge potential that has been rewarded with these medals,” Ms Henry said.
Aidan placed in the under-18 open 200 metres and 500 metres small boat events.
Kaitlyn scored in the 200 metre mixed small boat the under-18 two kilometre mixed standard boat events.
Senior Geelong Water Dragons paddlers Denis Jenkins and Lauren Vallance also brought home bronze medals as state representatives.
Ms Henry said she hoped the success of Aidan and Kaitlyn would encourage more young paddlers to take up the sport.
Geelong Water Dragons will hold a morning of dragon boating on 17 April, with coaching from the Australian team head coach before participating in a series of races.
