Wuthering Heights with a twist

Everyone knows something of the classic story of Wuthering Heights and its two key characters Cathy and Heathcliff.
But fewer these days have read Emily Brontë’s gothic masterpiece with its plot twists and interwoven characters.
A modern reimagining for the stage brings new life and insight to the story set against the bleakness of the Yorkshire moors and the grim hearts of the characters.
Presented by shake and stir theatre co and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, this re-working of a classic story features breathtaking design and a stellar cast.
Wuthering Heights tells the tale of Heathcliff, a mysterious boy rescued from the street and brought to the manor estate where he develops a passionate bond with Catherine Earnshaw.
As time passes, Heathcliff and Catherine’s relationship deepens to the point of dangerous obsession, leading Catherine to marry another man.
Overcome with jealousy, Heathcliff flees the Heights only to return, years later, ready to exact revenge on those he believed ruined his one chance at happiness.
Artistic director shake and stir Nick Skubij who adapted and directed this bold new work said the story was ready for re-telling.
“Aside from being an outstanding story of revenge, love and loss, we chose Wuthering Heights to re-imagine as we aim to invigorate classics for a new audience,” Subij said.
“Theatrically, we are also pushing the boundaries and thanks to our esteemed design team, Wuthering Heights will surprise and shock in all the right ways – we are literally bringing the natural elements into theatre.”
Wuthering Heights storms into The Playhouse as part of GPAC’s 2016 Deakin University Theatre Season from 14 to 16 April.
