Bellarine girls Storm home to victory over nemesis

By NOEL MURPHY

DRYSDALE’s under-16 Bellarine Storm girls basketball club has proven itself a giant-killer, taking out Melbourne’s prestigious Eltham-Dandenong tournament at the weekend.
Under the leadership of coach Brendan Matthews, the Storm girls accounted for Knox by just two points.
The 24:22 final margin was accumulated in a white-knuckle shootout after the Storm had earlier despatched last season’s VC1 premier, Altona, as well as powerhouses Hawthorn, Dandenong and Eltham.
“We’ve got the monkey off our back,” Matthews said after the win.
The victory was the Bellarine team’s first over Knox in seven encounters.
The Storm juniors surged from obscurity two years ago in the under 14s, climbing from third division to VC1 runner-up in one season.
The weekend’s showing featured powerful performances from Eve Braslis, Raini Matthews, Olivia Vert and Agnes Nnopu.
