Double Take

A wind-power turbine atop Surf Coast Shire’s flashy headquarters is broken again.
The cause?
Wind damage.
Apparently the device struggles with high winds, a regular feature of coastal Victoria.
It’s at least the second time wind has damaged the fancy turbine since the office opened around four years ago. Surely the issue should have been fixed the first time, given the likelihood of more gusty days in the future.
But why install a wind turbine that can’t handle high wind, anyway?
It’s like air-conditioning that breaks down in heatwaves, or emergency sprinklers that fail during fires.
No wonder the shire rated badly for planning in this year’s community satisfaction survey.

Galleries are usually places to contemplate images of great beauty; art that sets the heart soaring and stimulates the senses.
But not in Geelong, where the city’s premier hub of the best in art will host the ugliest individual to come out of the city since a former civic figure who will remain nameless for legal reasons.
Yes, it’s Graham (pictured), the TAC’s car-crash defying sculpture with a face not even a mother could love.
Now a worldwide sensation after his media launch last week, Graham will go on display at Geelong Gallery from 11 August to 14 September.
The gallery bills his appearance as an “incredibly opportunity” that will include a chance to “look beneath Graham’s skin”.
Er, no thanks, just the surface is bad enough for Double Take.

Mind you, perhaps Graham’s striking visage and 15 minutes of fame presents other opportunities for the wider Geelong community.
In the marketing spirit of replica Jimmy Bartel beards for fans to wear at his 300th match, Double Take proposes the Graham Mask.
Amuse friends, scare little kids, surprise your partner at bedtime – it’s the Graham Mask!
