State, residents ‘reject Cadel bridge honour’

KIM WATERS
TOUR de France hero Cadel Evans is unlikely to have Barwon Heads Bridge renamed in his honour, according to a community representative and State Government.
Barwon Heads Traders Association’s Hamish Lonsdale said outsiders were behind the Cadel Evans Bridge push.
Residents chose Barwon Heads Bridge in a “lengthy” consultation process earlier this year, he said, “and the minister confirmed it would be the chosen name.
“There’s a second, smaller bridge for cycling and pedestrians that we’d be happy to name the Cadel Evans Bridge but we think it would be more-appropriate to name the new cycling track along 13th Beach Road after Cadel.”
A Government spokesperson said authorities generally avoided using the living for commemorative naming purposes because “community attitudes and opinions can change”.
The spokesperson said Premier Ted Baillieu was “looking into different ways” of honouring Evans.
