EMERGENCY workers evacuated central Geelong shops on Wednesday morning after a gas leak closed Little Malop Street, according to a firefighter.
Geelong Fire Station senior manager Pat Geary said crews and police rushed to the scene around 8.30am after workers ruptured a gas line in Shorts Place.
Workers evacuated eight stores, he said.
“There were people doing some road and drainage works down there when they hit a gas main which was very close to the surface of the road,” he said.
“This caused a low pressure leak so passersby would have been able to smell gas as natural gas floats up into the air.
“It was all repaired within 20 minutes.”
