Double Take

The worlds of politics and fantasy collided as a Torquay dad drove a carload of little boys to a laser tag birthday celebration on the weekend.
The kids were excitedly discussing the fun ahead when one decided to adopt a character for the session.
“I’ll be a ghost,” he declared, inspiring his mates.
“I’ll be a monster,” followed another.
“I’ll be a Nazi,” said the next.
“I’ll be Tony Abbott,” burst out a fourth, much to the dad’s amusement.
What, no Clive Palmer?

Hats off to the savvy media folks plugging a certain new housing estate on Barwon Heads Rd last week.
With Geelong tonsorial tornado Darryn Lyons on site, they grabbed the handiwork of some quick-thinking tradies to snap this pic of his cleverly-accommodated cocky crest.
“Bit like a dunny brush but it’ll do the job,” one was heard to say.

Last week’s Indy story on falling local patronage of Avalon Airport elicited plenty of advice from readers.
With locals declining from 60 to 20 per cent of Avalon’s Jetstar passengers, the message was unanimous: we’ll return when we can fly to destinations other than just Sydney.
To (badly) paraphrase a late ‘60s hit, they were leaving on a jet plane but they’re not sure when they’ll be back again

Americanisms are just another instalment of the insidious creep of US spelling into our proud tradition of the Queen’s English whereby we make up strict rules only to be the first to break them ourselves in order to keep all and sundry confused.
A pair of vans belonging to an electrical contractor parked on Geelong’s waterfront proudly proclaimed services including “fiber optics”.
Phonetically correct and makes sense to all their customers, yet wrong.
Hmm, maybe the Yanks have a point after all.

And a sad farewell to Geelong basketball legend Ron Dawson who died recently.
Ron, aged 70, was a life member of Basketball Geelong, the Supercats, Geelong YMCA Basketball Club and Basketball Victoria Country.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Supercats and their entry into the NBL in 1982.
Even while seriously ill, Ron was still organising fundraisers and events, including a roast for YMCA president Craig Herbert and a bounce-as-thon fundraiser for brain cancer just weeks before his death.
Vale.
