A unique communication initiative and a sport event have won state awards for two Geelong disability project workers.
Karingal’s Lee Considine won a client services award and Encompass’s Brendan Beveridge took out the volunteer category at the 2011 Victorian Disability Sector Awards.
Mr Considine devised a model of communication that returned dignity and control to people with disabilities.
His Getting the Life You Want initiative partnered people with disabilities and support persons as advocates and allies.
“It’s a way of enabling people with a disability to make genuine choices in their lives,” Mr Considine said.
Mr Beveridge was instrumental in the development and implementation of Encompass Cup, a football match highlighting the abilities of young umpires with disabilities in the Geelong league.
Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge said both winners had made outstanding contributions to the disability sector.
