CHEETHAM’S dilapidated, asbestos-riddled saltworks site at Moolap would be fixed under a new State Government, according to Bellarine MP Lisa Neville.
The heritage-listed and environmentally-sensitive site has fallen into disrepair over the past 20 years under the ownership of Ridley Corporation and on the watch of successive governments.
Ridley now wants to redevelop the area as a $4 billion waterside suburb but the old saltworks administration precinct remains a dangerous mix of broken building materials and derelict sheds covered in graffiti.
Broken fencing allows easy access to the site for vandals who ignore ‘Danger Keep Out’ signs and asbestos warnings.
Ms Neville blamed the existing government for the area’s woes.
“Ridley Corporation has its hands tied and the Liberal government aren’t doing a thing to help them,” she said.
“Labor will do what it takes so Ridley can get to work and make this site safe.”
“Locals shouldn’t have to live in the shadow of danger for a moment longer.”
Ms Neville said Labor would work with Heritage Victoria, the EPA and Ridley to get the appropriate approvals in place, allowing the company to step in and make the site safer.
