Schoolies light up quietly here

Schoolies celebrations have had a “relatively” quiet start despite illegal campfires and minor vandalism, according to Torquay police and residents.
Torquay Senior Sergeant Brian McKiterick said police had issued schoolies with a “small amount” of fines and cracked down on a few of their noisy parties.
Snr Sgt McKiterick said the school leavers were “relatively well behaved”.
“Some small fires were lit near Cosy Corner and we had a few minor instances of willful damage,” Seg McKiterick said.
“But, generally, the behaviour has been quite good.”
Surf Coast Community Ratepayers Group secretary Lyn Smith reported a quiet start to schoolies week.
“There are about 20 boys staying in a house near us and they’re perfectly well behaved,” Ms Smith said.
“I think the weather might have something to do with it – it hasn’t been nice down here.”
Youth Substance Abuse Services spokesperson Pete Wearne attributed the good behaviour to extra police at Torquay and improved service from accommodation providers.
“Everyone has been really cooperative and there’s a great relationship between the schoolies, the hospital, licensed hotels and accommodation providers,” Mr Wearne said.
“There’s been good information given to the kids.”
Mr Wearne said he expected more schoolies to arrive in Torquay next week
“We’re expecting this weekend and next week to be busier,” he said.
“But so far we haven’t had any problems and it’s been pretty smooth sailing.”
