Cash ends Moriac upgrade wait

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

Modewarre football and cricket clubs will finally see a long-awaited pavilion upgrade after a $1.35 million funding announcement this week.
Sports Minister Hugh Delahunty said State Government would match $650,000 from Surf Coast Shire to build on $50,000 each from the clubs.
The Independent reported in August 2011 that Modewarre was repeatedly denied funding for its master plan in 2010. Mount Moriac Reserve had struggled with inadequate facilities since the clubs first first highlighted the problems in 2006, with home games lacking running water and incidents of raw sewage flowing over the ground.
The funding will provide upgrades to the sports pavilion and build new netball and tennis courts at the reserve.
Mr Delahunty said Modewarre’s football, netball, cricket and tennis clubs had male and female teams but the existing pavilion at the reserve was ill-equipped to cater for all users.
“The new pavilion will feature more accessible facilities, including improved change rooms, a flexible layout with more functional community spaces, a third netball court, two tennis courts and a new play space, all of which will ensure kids right through to adults can enjoy the reserve.
“Sporting facilities are important community assets and provide a social hub, particularly in regional areas.
“As well as the health benefits, we’re also helping stimulate the local economy and create jobs throughout the construction phase.”
