Suburbs sizzle in 40 degrees

Temperatures reached 43.4 in Corio and were well above 40 across many more Geelong suburbs as the region sweltered today.

The hottest part of the day occurred late afternoon, ahead of an expected cool change to reach the region around 7pm tonight.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the cool change would drop the temperature by 10 or 15 degrees. There would also be gusty winds and a possible severe weather warning.

V/Line has switched to its go-slow policy across all lines, with services being cut back to 90km/h to cope with the high temperatures.

Ambulance Victoria has warned resources will again be stretched as Victoria enters another heatwave likely to be longer than the last.

Predictions are for temperatures to reach the high 30s again towards the end of the week.
