EXCELLENT angling conditions over the past week resulted in some brilliant captures.
Surf anglers were treated to huge numbers of quality salmon.
Garry Jennings spun the rocks near Wye River where he caught fish well over two kilograms during a hot two-hour catch-and-release session.
John Mole enjoyed a mid-week expedition casting lures from the rocks just near She Oaks River, where he said all the best action was during the afternoon high tides.
I took my son, Hudson, to Snapper Rocks just near Skenes Creek where he had a ball catching and releasing salmon better than 1kg on light spin tackle.
Many anglers were successful at Apollo Bay, with Wild Dog Creek and Marengo beaches producing salmon to 2.3kg, particularly on lure.
Daniel Hawkins used light tackle on the rocks at Cinema Point to fish sandworm suspended under a small float with success. By day’s end his bag included sweep, garfish, leatherjacket, mullet, salmon and a 4kg dusky morwong.
Snapper anglers had to contend with near-freezing conditions on the bay but their reward was quality fish.
Paul Tanner fished Monday night for a bag-limit catch of snapper to more than 7kg. Paul fished close in to North Shore rocks where a nearby angler caught three, the biggest nudging 10kg.
Daniel Carpenter fished after dark land-based at Point Lillias last weekend, catching a magnificent snapper of 6.3kg.
Soft plastics angler Graham Porter worked Geelong’s waterfront with mixed results, landing two fish in the past six outings but both weighing over 4kg.
Damian Palmer drifted with soft plastics in his kayak among the Western Beach boat moorings, boating two nice flathead and a 2.6kg snapper.
Anglers prepared to wade the shallows at Hermsley caught quality squid, Grant Parsons fished this area twice during the week with small jigs, returning both times with three squid, the best weighing just under 2kg.
The Barwon River in Geelong was high and discoloured but Tony Spartini still gave it a go, grassing around a dozen eels on worms in a couple of hours on Monday night.
Lake Bullen Merri continued producing small fish, although patient anglers managed rainbow trout averaging just over 1kg.
Moorabool Reservoir continued frustrating most anglers, with fly returning the best results. Justin Rayner put away his lures to try the reservoir with fly, landing a pair of fantastic brown trout in just two hours of fishing.
Howard Carpenter put in seven hours of lure casting in a single day at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, returning with three redfin from 1.75kg to 1.98kg, all caught on a Pegron Minnow in the rainbow colour.
Hepburn Lagoon’s low water remained uninviting but continued yielding big brown trout, with Nathan Hunt landing a magnificent fish of 2.9kg on a shallow-running Rapala X Rap.
Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree was the quiet achiever, producing fantastic reports of trout and redfin on lure and fly.
Rainbow trout eere liberated into North Geelong’s Seagull Lake and Highton’s St Augustines Lake last week, so they should provide excellent holiday fishing options for children using Powerbait or worms and a little patience.
Conditions again look ideal for salmon along the coast this weekend, while the freshwater option should be Lake Wendouree
