Disabled have a ball on a starry Friday night in city

John Van Klaveren
The dream of becoming a debutante became a reality for a group of people with disabilities at a presentation ball last week.
The Starry Starry Night ball offered 14 couples the opportunity to shine as they were presented to Geelong Mayor John Mitchell at North Geelong’s Capri Receptions on Friday night.
Karingal partnered with women’s service club Zonta Geelong to organise the ball. The couples included Karingal clients with staff members, family or friends acting as partners
Karingal chief executive officer Daryl Starkey said participants enjoyed learnng dances, dressing up and their presentation to a room full of guests.
“It was a fantastic success,” Mr Starkey said.
“When Zonta first broached the idea with us, we spoke to clients and they were resoundingly positive about being involved.”
Zonta Geelong president Jane Adornetto said the ball fitted in perfectly with the club mission to advance the status of women.
Local entertainer Tim McCallum combined with band Cool Change to provide entertainment.
A call for support in the Independent resulted in a flood of donated dresses, corsages provided from Belmont florist Bella Rose and hair and make up services. The Independent was a sponsor of the event.
