BARBERSHOP quartets aren’t really quartets. They can be septets, octets or warbling, crooning mobs of many more – and they often are.
The animated collection of singers comprising Geelong Conchords has in fact 20 sets of tonsils contributing to its lengthy vocal barbershop catalogue.
But their four-way harmonies – the quartet of bass, tenor, baritone and lead – remain faithful to the barbershop charter and these a cappella fellas couldn’t be happier than when they’re on song.
Right now they’re on the hunt for blokes of like mind interested in immersing themselves in the chorus line – and snappy suits – of unaccompanied singing.
Spokesman Rod Mackenzie said the Conchords – sometimes known as “the Mercedes Benz of vocal blends” – had been a going concern for 15 years.
“Barbershop singing is a great way to enjoy music and good fellowship and to enhance health and well-being,” he said.
“Anyone who would like to have a go can attend practice night 7pm Wednesday at St Andrews Church Hall in East Geelong.”
