GEELONG has the most litter dobbers participating in an Environment Protection Authority Victoria anti-litter campaign, according to EPA chair Cheryl Batagol.
The EPA summer litter campaign attracted 259 “litter reporters”, leading to 167 fines, she said.
The figures showed Geelong had excelled and was leading the charge to rid the region of litter, particularly cigarette butts.
“Ninety per cent of fines related to cigarette butts being thrown from the windows of cars, Ms Batagol said.
Litter fines can range from $288 to $577 for a lit cigarette butt thrown from a car because of the danger of starting fires.
Ms Batagol said the campaign aimed to raise awareness that littering could attract significant fines.
Litter collection costs City of Greater Geelong around $2 million annually.
Ms Batagol said litterers could be reported with the campaign’s new smart phone app, the EPA’s 1300 372 842 hotline or via its website.
