Store breaks barrier to win customer service award

By Editorial

A CLEVER solution to a communication barrier between a wheelchair-bound customer and his deaf parents has earned Geelong West’s Tiger-$2 a customer service award.
Brennan Houghton was struggling to let his parents know when he needed them until the shop’s Lee McKinnis hit on the idea of a wireless doorbell with a flashing red light.
Brennan simply holds the control, his parents have the receiver and the light alerts them any time he needs help.
Brennan was so impressed he nominated Tiger-$2 for a monthly Shop Local Geelong Customer Service Award.
“They deserve the award for proposing a simple, elegant and clever solution to a problem,” Brennan wrote in his award nomination.
“It works perfectly, even from the back of the garden.”
Lee was thrilled when the Independent presented the September Shop Local award to the store this week.
“It’s fantastic,” she said.
“We really do try hard to give our customers what they need.”
The monthly customer service award is part of the Independent’s Shop Local Geelong campaign. With the support of Geelong’s council and chamber of commerce, the campaign encourages shoppers to spend locally rather than online or out of town.
Nominations, including the writer’s name, address and phone number, should say in 50 words or less why a store deserves to win.
Send nominations to: Geelong Shop Local Customer Service Award, PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220; email editorial@geelongindependent.com.au; fax 5249 6799; or facebook.com/GeelongIndependent.
