Bike body backs road safety code

GEELONG’s Bike Safe organisation has helped bolster a new statewide code for cyclists, drivers and pedestrians, according to its president.
Barton van Laar said the Sharing the Roads and Paths’ code tackled behaviour and road rules where cyclists and others found themselves in the same territory.
“Sharing the road has mutual obligations with all road users needing to obey the road rules and showing respect for one another,” Mr van Laar said.
“However, we still point out cyclists are the most vulnerable and we appeal to everyone to pass cyclists with care.
“This program is very valuable as it specifically helps educate everyone what they can do to make the roads and paths safer.”
Mr van Laar said VicRoads, Bike Safe, Amy Gillett Foundation, Victoria Police and others had brought together the code, available at amygillett.org.au/vic-srap.
