The new Grovedale railway station has been welcomed by Deakin Vice Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander.
“Grovedale Station can’t come soon enough as far as we are concerned and I am absolutely delighted that the State Government has announced the funding today that will see this project get off the ground,” she said.
“We have long argued the need for a railway station closer to our campus at Waurn Ponds and, once complete, this station will vastly improve the public transport offer to that campus and its surrounding community.”
Currently Waurn Ponds students and staff who travel from Melbourne need to transfer to public bus services at Geelong Station and take the 40 to 50 minute journey through Geelong suburbs to get to the campus or use University-funded buses, taking about 20 minutes.
“The Grovedale Station will reduce travel time, reduce traffic on our roads and provide long-needed infrastructure to one of Victoria’s fastest growing regions,” Professor den Hollander said.
“We will still need a reliable shuttle bus service between the new station and campus, but the considerably shorter distance should provide for a much more efficient connection between rail and bus.”
Professor den Hollander also welcomed the announcement that 25 return services a day would operate from the new Grovedale station.
“We are yet to see the detail on timetabling, but frequent services throughout the day will be welcomed by staff and students,” she said.
