A CONSORTIUM bidding for the Land 400 defence program has announced it will base part of its manufacturing operation in Geelong.
Federal Member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, said Team Sentinel, led by Elbit Systems Australia, had lodged its bid for the first phase with the Department of Defence.
The consortium planned to base its systems integration and turret manufacturing facilities of 225 vehicles in Geelong, Ms Henderson said.
“Today is a significant moment for Geelong. Team Sentinel’s confidence in Geelong and our future as an advanced manufacturing powerhouse is very exciting.
“It is also focused on delivering a very high percentage of Australian industry content which is an important priority for our government.
“That means more jobs for local workers and more opportunities for businesses and the extended supply chain.
“Team Sentinel modelling shows there will be around 300 jobs (direct and indirect) created locally with a total of around 500 (direct and indirect) jobs created across Victoria.
“Geelong companies will have the opportunity to play a vital role in this project including in relation to component and parts supply, integration of Australian communications, sensor and weapons systems, engineering and testing facilities, and vehicle sustainment and logistics.
“This news clearly demonstrates that we have the skills and experience that can support the provision of Australian Defence infrastructure and equipment.
“Strategically, I believe our region is the best possible location for producing this new combat vehicle for the Australian Army.
“The existing Defence vehicle testing site is at our doorstep and we have a proven source of innovative research in advanced materials and intelligent systems.
“Our workforce is job ready and can be easily retrained through our programs with Deakin University and the Gordon.
“If successful, this contract will open the door to a new world of opportunity leading to the employment of hundreds of workers,” Ms Henderson said.
