Avalon estate ‘to employ 2000 over next 10 years’

A new industrial estate at Avalon Airport will create almost 2000 jobs over the next 10 years, according to the State Government.
The 40-hectare estate in the airport’s north-west corner would also help it “diversify its operations and attract further investment”, the Government said.
Victorian taxpayers would chip in almost a third of the estate’s $5 million infrastructure cost to “ensure Avalon can reach its true potential”.
“It is estimated by 2026 the project will have created 750 direct jobs on site and up to 1100 indirect jobs,” the Government said.
“A key part of the infrastructure project will be the delivery of high-voltage electricity, gas, water, fibre optics and communications infrastructure.
“Developing the industrial precinct will also make it ready for investment that will further expand the site’s use and create more jobs for the greater Geelong region.”
The announcement follows a bipartisan pledge for the Federal Government to change Avalon’s classification so it can secure international passenger flights.
Jetstar has a state-subsidised 10-year agreement to use the airport for domestic passengers.
Premier Daniel Andrews said the airport now also had “potential to be a major industrial and commercial jobs hub”.
Lara MP and Victorian Tourism Minister John Eren said the industrial precinct would “mean more jobs for locals and a stronger economy”.
Avalon Airport executive chairman David Fox thanked the Government for helping to fund the infrastructure costs.
“Avalon Airport is grateful for the Victorian Government’s contribution towards its investment in establishing a new industrial precinct,” he said.
“This project is the first since the approval of the master plan in September last year and provides a great opportunity to diversify businesses and generate jobs for the region.”
