A TRIAL of new safety gear on Geelong posties is set to add a dash of vivid colour to mail runs around the state, according to Australia Post.
Spokesperson Melanie Ward said Geelong posties had participated in a trial of new high-visibility uniforms and bike “enhancements” with “encouraging results”.
Accidents were down significantly and posties had reported improved confidence while on the road, Ms Ward said.
The trial followed a report in the Independent last year revealing City of Greater Geelong was a national hot-spot for posties falling victim to careless drivers and dog attacks.
The City had recorded 38 “serious incidents” in the previous year, prompting Australia Post to call for residents and motorists to consider the safety of posties.
Ms Ward said the results of the safety trial could save lives.
Australia Post would now begin rolling out the safety improvements around Victoria.
However, Ms Ward said drivers should still keep their eyes peeled for posties despite the safety upgrade.
“It’s a timely reminder for the community to keep a look out for posties when reversing out of driveways or generally on the road,” she said.
