More Torquay families are seeking food donations as they struggle to meet rising living costs, according to a community organisation.
Torquay Food Aid president Graeme Daws said the association was serving up to 20 families and individuals a week, up 30 per cent on last year.
“In the past we had 14 or sometimes 16 families but lately we’ve noticed an increase,” Mr Daws said.
He blamed increased living expenses and rising unemployment.
“Some families are really struggling and they rely on our services,” Mr Daws said.
The food aid organisation had been feeding needy residents for 15 years, he said.
“We have a group of ladies who help pack the food hampers, which are then delivered to the families every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.
“We also have some emergency hampers on hand for people who drop in.”
Mr Daws said community organisations, businesses and service groups such as Lions and Rotary clubs ensured Torquay Food Aid was “well-supported”, although volunteers were always welcome.
“We’re pretty right funds-wise but sometimes we struggle to get enough people for deliveries,” Mr Daws said.
“We could do with a few back-up or emergency delivery people.”
Mr Daws asked residents willing to volunteer or make donations to phone Torquay Food Aid on 5264 8441.
