Women will lead a march to the region’s biggest Anzac Day service for the first time next week.
Torquay’s Margaret Delahunty, Audrey McKenzie, Dot Snowden, Joan Sparkes and Dorothy Stewart will represent women who served in World War Two at the town’s Point Danger dawn service.
Torquay RSL’s Peter Thomas said the committee decided it was time women led the march.
“Each year we choose local exservicemen to lead the march. These (women) represent groups who served during the war,” Mr Thomas said.
“They deserve to lead the march and they’re excited.”
Geelong RSL subbranch president Hayden Shell praised the Torquay branch’s initiative.
“This is the 21st Century. Things have changed and we are changing with it,” Mr Shell said.
A march to the dawn service will begin at the corner of The Esplanade and Price Street at 5.45am. The service begins 6am.
