Geelong’s council is pushing for membership of a new body to recommend funding priorities for the region’s economic growth, according to Mayor John Mitchell.
Mayor John Mitchell said membership of Barwon Southwest Regional Development Authority was crucial as City of Greater Geelong embarked on a period of intense lobbying for regional infrastructure projects.
“The City has been very clear on the need for a regional focus,” he said.
“We strongly support (regional councils alliance body) G21 but we should also be allowed to become a member of regional development authority (RDA).”
Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos supported the City’s application for membership.
The RDA advises on federal funding as well as 40 per cent of the proposed $1 billion Victorian regional growth fund.
Barwon Southwest RDA chair Bruce Anson said the authority supported the City’s application but federal Regional Development Minister Simon Crean was responsible for appointment.
The RDA had a full complement of members but one member would soon resign, Mr Anson said.
