Stolen Olympic medals have turned up 24 years later at a Corio home.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Nick Uebergang said a tip-off lead to the recovery of the 16 medals, including a gold, belonging to swimmer John Konrads.
The haul also included a cherished medal from World War II.
Det Uebergang said a Corio woman allegedly bought the medals at a garage sale for $200 while living in Brisbane about 12 years ago before moving to Geelong.
“She sat on the medals for a while before selling them on Ebay in May,” he said.
Det Uebergang said a buyer discovered the medals were stolen when he sought information about their history from Mr Konrads, who then contacted police.
Police had not laid charges, Det Uebergang said.
Mr Konrads was “ecstatic” to have the medals returned.
“He expected the medals had been lost or melted down, he never expected to see them again,” Det Uebergang said
“This is not run-of-the-mill and we’re just happy to be able to return the medals to an owner who really deserves them.”
