GANGLAND heavyweight Tony Mokbel is being investigated for an assault in Barwon Prison which left another inmate with a suspected broken nose.

The injured prisoner, a man in his mid-30s, was taken to hospital for treatment last Thursday afternoon and returned to the jail a short time afterwards.

A spokesman for Corrections Victoria confirmed a prisoner had been injured, and that police were probing the incident and had taken control of the investigation.

Mokbel, 48, is serving a minimum of 22 years in the maximum security unit of the prison for masterminding a multi-million dollar drug empire.

He became Australia’s most wanted man when he skipped bail in March, 2006, and fled to Greece on a yacht.

He was recaptured in June 2007.

Mokbel is believed to have been moved into the mainstream area of the prison in recent times.

However, although the Corrections spokesman did not nominate Mokbel as the alleged attacker, he said that the prisoner involved in the incident had now been moved to a unit on a higher security level.
