TV show brings new hope to cold case murder

By Mandy Oakham

Police are “hopeful” that one of Geelong’s most infamous cold cases, the murder of schoolboy Ricky Balcombe in Market Square Mall, may soon be solved.
The investigation into the murder has been re-energised with the offer of a $1 million reward for information leading to a conviction in the case.
The murder on 5 May 1995 was featured this week on the Channel 7 television show Million Dollar Cold Case. The case is one of 10 unsolved homicides selected by Victoria Police.
More than two decades after his death, Ricky’s family are still looking for justice for their beloved boy who was only 16 when he was stabbed and left to bleed to death.
A spokesperson for Victoria Police described the investigation into the murder as “ongoing” and that detectives were now “hopeful” that people would come forward after the television coverage of the case.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
