SHE may have narrowly escaped eviction from hit TV show X Factor this week but Gnarwarre’s Jacqui Newland is the next big thing in music, according to bandmate Lucia van Parreren.
Newland, 23, reached the final 12 last week to compete in live shows but her performance of Taylor Swift’s hit single Love Story failed to impress the judges.
She had to “sing for her life” after dropping to the bottom two on the Channel 7 show this week.
Ms van Parreren, who has performed alongside Newland for four years, said the blonde bombshell was destined for stardom despite her rocky start in the competition.
“I first met Jacqui when she was only 17 before we both joined the band Plum Crazy, so I know she’s got so much talent. I think the edge she’s got over everyone else will be her confidence and experience.
“She’s got expert microphone skills, background knowledge and has dealt with large crowds for years. She’ll be the dark horse of the competition.”
Newland grew up in Belmont where she attended high school. She was due to return to study primary teaching before entering the world-famous X Factor franchise under the guidance of former Spice Girl Mel B.
Ms van Parreren and Newland’s friends were now planning weekly X Factor parties to cheer on their songstress.
“We had all the band members come in and had a bit of an X Factor party this week and you should have heard the squeals from everyone. We’re all so proud of her.
“The first few episodes were a bit surreal but we know she’s in her element. She looks gorgeous.
“She really will be Geelong’s little darling.”
