Stressed Torquay residents taking the philosophical approach to life

STRESSED out workers and housewives are turning to “practical philosophy” in the sanctuary of Torquay’s cafes.
Sitting over a coffee or sipping a wine in front of an open fireplace, participants are overcoming life’s everyday pressures through the virtues of truth and wisdom.
Teacher Jean Bohuslav said businessmen, tradies, mothers and doctors were all benefiting from “obtaining a higher awareness” of their mind in the fast-growing philosophy sessions.
“It’s about trying to be in the present moment, not looking at the past or the future but the present and being open-minded, so no holding on to existing beliefs,” she said.
Ms Bohuslav believed that new-age philosophy was changing lives.
She said she had noticed a calming influence on people with the busiest lifestyles, including a woman who ran a hospital ward.
Philosophical meditation exercises were also underway for medical students to “watch the mind”, Ms Bohuslav said.
“They need to sift through the emotion and let it dissipate,” she observed.
Ms Bohuslav said the growth of the sessions after less than a month had led to the philosophy groups moving to Torquay’s Crowne Plaza.
She asked anyone interested in participating to phone her on 5264 7484.
