Cats seek approval for name Premiership Stand

Geelong Football Club has snubbed its legends in a bid to name a new stand.
The club has announced it will seek approval for the name Premiership Stand after the Cats turned their back on the traditional Australian Rules naming choice of former champion players, coaches or administrators.
City of Greater Geelong owns the stadium, so councillors will vote next week on whether to approve the name.
Club president Frank Costa said the playing and coaching groups and executive had driven the choice of name.
The board backed the push at its latest meeting, he said.
“We are all about team success and we see the Premiership Stand as an opportunity to recognise the great successes of the past and at the same time (the name) is aspirational for teams in the future,” Mr Costa said.
“We are sure that, had we chose to name the stand after a past great of the club, people would have been accepting of that. However, we see this as an opportunity to celebrate team achievements.
“After all, team success is what everybody at the club is striving for an it is what we believe should be celebrated.”
The club hopes the stand will be ready to open early next year.
