A POLICE dog handler has received treatment in hospital after an incident in Lara.
Police were called to a two-storey house where a man, who had a noose around his neck and claimed he had a firearm in his possession, was threatening self-harm.
The senior constable and his, newly recruited police dog Izak, were tasked to keep the man contained within the perimeters of the house to minimise any threat to attending police.
The man came out onto a balcony and threw a piece of balcony railing at the senior constable striking him on the head.
With blood covering his face, the senior constable and Izak remained at their location, while the man continued throwing nearly 30 pieces of railing from the balcony.
Just before midnight, the man commenced to walk down some external steps from the balcony, approaching the police members in the front yard.
As he threw a large paver at the handler and his dog, Izak was unleashed and brought the man down as per his police training.
The man was quickly taken into custody and will be interviewed by police over the incident.
Dog Squad Leading Senior Constable Matt Steel said the handler and his dog did a magnificent job.
“Believe it or not, but the use of a dog in these situations is considered to be our best non-lethal option,” he said.
“Izak seems pretty happy with himself at the moment; he is just new on the job and has done everything right.”
