A rescue package modelled on assistance to its traditional adversary could help Ford build a new engine in Geelong.
AMWU vehicle division national secretary Ian Jones said unions and State Government would run a feasibility study into new engine work at Ford.
Mr Jones said the study would run along similar lines to assistance that helped Holden maintain engine jobs at Fisherman’s Bend.
“If we use Holden as a model we would want to build something capable of export,” he said.
“I wouldn’t put it any higher than a feasibility study at the moment but the objective is to demonstrate we can manufacture engines efficiently in Australia and that it makes sense for Ford to do it.”
