Woman hospitalised after car hits Newcomb bus shelter

A DRIVER attempting to evade police this morning smashed into a Newcomb bus shelter then fled on foot, leaving his injured passenger in the car.

Police attempted to pull over the grey Toyota sedan on Thompson Road just before 9am.

The Toyota, believed to be stolen, took off and police pursued it for a few seconds and then called off the chase.

A police media spokeswoman said the Toyota continued at speed along the Bellarine Highway.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and it smashed into a bus shelter at Wilsons Road.

The driver ran from the scene and a 24-year-old female passenger from Bell Post Hill was taken to Geelong Hospital.

She is assisting police with their inquiries.
