Surf flicks to raise money for depression, disabled

Jessica Benton
Barwon Heads will host a movie night this weekend to raise money for Beyond Blue and Disabled Surfers Association.
Organiser Ross Harrison said tomorrow night’s event would feature a new documentary on legendary surfer Michael Peterson.
“Michael Peterson was one of the great Australian surfers of the ’70s and he also suffered from mental illness, so it’s fitting we’re showing the new documentary.
“Peterson sort of self destructed because of his illness, so it’s a documentary about his life. It’s only just been released in the states and it’s getting good reviews.”
He hoped success at this weekend’s inaugural film night would lead to similar events in the future.
All proceeds would go to national depression initiative Beyond Blue and the new Bellarine Peninsula branch of Disabled Surfers Association, Mr Harrison said.
The branch set up at Ocean Grove earlier this year to give disabled people an opportunity to experience surfing.
Mr Harrison said the surf film night would be at Barwon Heads’ Town Hall, Hitchcock Avenue, from 7pm on Saturday.
He encouraged residents to surf enthusiasts to support the event.
Tickets cost $15 from stickytickets.com.au or at the door, Mr Harrison said.
