Labor staffer to challenge for mayor’s Kardinia seat

A Labor electorate officer will challenge Geelong’s Mayor if he stands for re-election at November’s council election.
Russell Menzies credited Bruce Harwood with doing a “reasonable job” but said his Kardinia ward had missed its share of Geelong’s prosperity in recent years.
Residents of Kardinia, which covers Belmont, were living in “an ‘80s time warp”, Mr Menzies said.
“The only development occurring in the area is…large housing blocks carved up to create medium-density housing that the current councillors approved.
“Kardinia residents deserve better, Kardinia residents deserve a fresh start.”
Mr Menzies, a Labor member, works in the office of federal Member for Corio Richard Marles.
Mr Menzies said his Labor links could benefit council.
“Without wanting to make the council political, I can see being a (Labor) member as a distinct advantage,” he said.
Mr Menzie is vice-president of Marshall Cricket Club and a former president of Belmont Lions Sports Club.
Cr Harwood described himself as “independent” when he ran for a second term as mayor in November.
