Ocean Grove sisters on run to national titles

A TRIP to Brisbane to compete in national cross-country championships would daunt most adult runners but two pre-teen Ocean Grove sisters are taking it in their stride.
Corrin and Heidi Demeo will join 10 other Victorian runners from their age groups at the championships in Brisbane on August 21.
Mother Belinda said the 11- and 12-year-olds had already racked up plenty of medals and trophies between them.
Corrin was state under-12s champion and Heidi finished sixth in Victorian under-10 trials, Ms Demeo beamed.
“Both girls just love running and playing sport, so they see Brisbane as a chance to have fun.”
The girls would also compete in the Victorian relay team at the event, she said.
“We’re just so proud of them both.”
Corrin hoped her nerves would settle before the event but was looking forward to competing with her sister.
“I always get pretty nervous before an event, especially the night before,” she said.
“It’s really nice to compete at the same events and we congratulate each other when we win. As the big sister, I give Heidi tips and help her out sometimes.”
Despite her status as state cross country champion, Corrin was modest about her prospects of becoming a professional athlete.
“I don’t know if that will ever happen because it’s really hard to do.
“It’s a good dream, though, to want to go to the Olympics or something.”
Corrin said the sisters were “very excited” about the upcoming event.
“It’s pretty cool and we’re looking forward to it.”
