LOCAL primary schools have been honoured as good citizens of their communities.
Order of Australia Association Barwon Regional Group invited all local schools to enter its Primary School Citizenship Award.
The awards sought to celebrate schools with curriculum activities in line with the association’s goal, “to foster love of and pride in Australian citizenship”.
The awards’ judging panel assessed citizenship projects at three schools: Baptist College, Newtown Primary School and Our Lady Star of the Sea Ocean Grove Primary School.
Newtown primary was the overall winner, receiving a cheque from the association during a presentation at Geelong RSL.
All entrant schools received certificates to acknowledge their citizenship activities.
Newtown primary principal Amanda Hay said her school won for its annual “major focus” on ANZAC day, with students creating wreaths linked to each year’s study themes.
