GEELONG West is known for its singular community, its ethnic and urban cultures – and its jewels.
Academic, activist and author Kristin Demetrious is one such gem whose contribution to Geelong West’s heritage, streetscapes, green credentials and better understanding of its own inherent values are a small treasure in their own right.
“As a young mum Kristin saw the need to improve her neighbourhood by beautifying the streetscape, planting trees, proposing traffic-calming measures, celebrating our heritage and improving amenities,” said Geelong West Neighbourhood House’s Rosemary Nugent.
“Many of these things that we take for granted today are due to the efforts and foresight of Kristin and others in our community.
“Kristin has been a grassroots community activist who has been involved with a variety of urban greening and place-making projects in Geelong West. Her efforts link to a strong chain of community spirit in Geelong West; one that, over the years, has characterised this special place and its reputation for progressive thinking and bold initiatives.”
Next weekend Ms Demetrious will detail her experiences as a newcomer to Geelong West from inner-city Melbourne.
In the third of Geelong West Neighbourhood House’s Jewel of the West talks, she will address the transition and the beginnings of her involvement with the local community.
Unsurprisingly, Ms Demetrious is a little self-effacing, attributing her achievements to others.
“The cosmopolitan feel to Geelong West is quite unique and comes together really nicely,” she said.
“Geelong West is a place that’s still growing. It’s alive and got a real heart and that what’s really attractive about it.
“Hopefully new residents locating in West will find their voice and contribute. There’s a tradition of people putting in with progressive things.”
In 2003 Ms Demetrious received a Centenary Medal for her voluntary service with urban environmental and place-making group Greening Geelong West.
An associate professor at Deakin University, in 2008 she was named Teacher of the Year and in 2009 received a national teaching citation.
She will speak at Geelong West Town Hall’s supper room from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday.
