ROYAL Geelong Yacht Club’s success hosting international events has won another world championship for Corio Bay.
Competitors from around the globe will sail in January’s International 14 World Championship.
Regatta manager Peter Kirman expected half of the 90 entrants to come from overseas.
“The crews of two bring support with them and also their families for at least two weeks. We’re anticipating a lot of people coming into the town.”
Mr Kirman said the 14-footers would use a course keeping competitors as close to on-shore spectators as possible.
“The 14s are a development class, so they’re exciting to watch.”
The club successfully hosted a Melges 24 World Championships earlier this year.
The 14s will provide a lead in to Geelong’s annual Festival of Sails, the largest sailing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere, catering for over 350 yachts, 4000 sailors and 100,000 visitors.
