Choral groups joining forces

SINGALONG: Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

TWO OF Geelong’s leading choral groups are joining forces to banish the dull and dreary winter blues with a special Father’s Day musical event.
Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir and Geelong Harmony Chorus will combine their talents to present Sing into Spring in a marvellous musical collaboration.
A regular performer around the region, Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir is currently preparing for a 10-day tour of New Zealand in October.
Music director Jeanette John said the choir had performed internationally and earlier this year sung under the direction of famed Welsh conductor Ilid Anne Jones.
The 36-member choir had been going strong for 16 years after forming to help Portarlington’s National Celtic Folk Festival to fly the Welsh musical flag, John said.
“We’re an all-female choir singing a broad range of music in two, three and four-part harmony,” she explained.
“The repertoire includes traditional Welsh and Australian, sacred, musical theatre, popular, inspirational and upbeat music.”
Geelong Harmony Chorus has turned the traditional male barbershop genre on its head, taking on the genere’s traditional four-part harmonies in a women’s a capella chorus of 30 voices.
Music director Alex Morris said the chorus was passionate about singing the complex and beautiful harmonies of barbershop.
The chorus won second place in the AA division of this year’s Sweet Adelines Australia Sydney national convention where the group achieved its highest ever competition score.
Sing into Spring will be performed at Drysdale’s The Potato Shed at 2pm on 7 September. Tickets are available from City of Greater Geelong customer service centres.
